Fall 2015 Common Reading Events

The following Common Reading Events are scheduled for Fall 2015. We hope to see you there! Additional events and event details will be added here as they develop, so please check back often:
 
Friday, Aug 21: Convocation Speech by Dr. Ben Waddell. Dr. Waddell introduced the themes of this year's book in an inspiring speech to incoming ASU first year and transfer students.
 
Monday, Sept 21: Resident Assistant (RA) Book Discussion and Book Discussion Training led by CRE Committee members. RA's will participate in a book discussion and learn how to lead residence hall students in their own book discussions. Coronado Hall, eve.
 
Tuesday, Oct 6: Screening and Discussion of "Inequality for All", the documentary that accompanies Robert Reich's book. The film will be followed by a moderated audience discussion. Richardson Hall Auditorium. 7:00pm.
 
Tuesday, Oct 13: Kindred Spirits Luncheon Book Discussion: Nielsen Library Director will facilitate a faculty/staff discussion of the book and film. SUB AS126/A131, 12:00pm-1:00pm.
 
Wednesday, Oct 14: Book Discussion @ Nielsen. All faculty, staff, students, and community members are welcome to join in a group book discussion. First floor Nielsen Library, 6:00pm.
 
Sunday, Oct 18: "Land, Fire, and Water". A selection of short films addressing local and rural issues. The feature short film is "Voices of the Valley", produced and directed by ASU student Chris Quintana and Dr. Ben Waddell. Art Building Room 227, 2:00pm. Co-sponsored by Southern Colorado Film Festival, National Endowment for the Humanities Latino Americans: 500 Years of History grant, and the Common Reading Experience Committee. 2:00pm.

Sunday, Oct 18: Screening of "Bringing It Home", a film about the industrial hemp industry that touches upon themes in "Aftershock", including globalization, job creation, economic development, and sustainable growth. A panel discussion with regional farmers will follow the film screening. Co-sponsored by Southern Colorado Film Festival and the Common Reading Experience Committee. Art Building room 227, 7:00pm.

Monday, Oct 19: Model UN Student Debate. Student members of Model United Nations will debate each other on issues surrounding rising inequality. Moderated by Dr. Mari Centeno. McDaniel 101, 7:00pm.
 
Wednesday, November 4: Adams State Academic Panel Discussion: A moderated panel discussion of ASU professors across multiple disciplines, addressing the themes of "Aftershock" and how they interrelate. McDaniel 101, 6:30pm.
 
November 3: La Puente Project: Service Learning and Photography Exhibit. Featured artists: Michael Goe, Connor Hile, Judith Martinez, Kellicia Morse. Second floor Nielsen Library. A reception will be held on 2nd floor Nielsen Library from 1:00-3:00pm. The exhibit will be shown November 1 - 29 (all month).
 
We're also actively developing additional Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 events, details still in the works:
  • Skype session with prominent leaders of the national Occupy movement (Feb 2015)
  • Moderated panel discussion with regional scholars (Spring 2015)
  • Poetry event
