AI CANNOT:
- Write your paper. AI has been shown to reference non-existent sources, make broad claims, and fail to support allegations.
- Substitute for assigned reading. AI created summaries do not capture the details of the article, distinguish it from other sources, or address how it fits into scholarship on that topic.
- Do a literature review. AI may be able to pull cited sources or the bibliography from an article, but it may also include 'hallucinated' sources which do not actually exist. While AI may be able to find you works similar to another, make sure the AI generated source exists and is accurately represented.
However, AI CAN:
- Fix your grammar/punctuation. Tools like Grammarly have incorporated AI into their function. Because the probability of a typo is significantly less than an accurately spelled word, AI can help those tools locate typos and grammatical exceptions.
- Rephrase a sentence. If you enter a sentence you typed into AI and ask it to rephrase it with a certain goal, AI can assist. However, do not use this to paraphrase as the original material is copyrighted.
- Help you brainstorm. Gemini can help you shape an argument, determine how to phrase a particular concept, or refine the focus of your paper. However, whether such practice is permitted in your class is up to the professor. Check with your professor before using AI in any context for any coursework.
