Latino Americans: 500 Years of History is a grant program funded and co-sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Libraries Association. The Nielsen Library was awarded this grant to develop a year of events celebrating regio

Spring 2016

Join us for a week of Latino Americans:500 Years of History grant events centering around Cesar Chavez Week! Generous cosponsors include the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area, UNIDOS, and C.A.S.A. Center. Event details:

Tuesday, January 26, 7:00pm, McDaniel Hall 101: "The Head of Joaquin Murrieta". A 30-minute film about the history of Mexican-American lynchings. The film will be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, John J. Valadez. John is a Peabody Award winner who filmed two episodes (War and Peace; Prejudice and Pride) of the PBS Latino Americans documentary series.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cesar Chavez Week (details forthcoming):

  • Two labor/land-related presentations by regional groups
  • A panel session on current land and water rights issues in the SLV.
  • Screening of one PBS episode relating to the Chicano movement
  • Screening and panel discussion of one more episode ("Peril and Promise 1980-2000", episode 6) with a panel of notable SLVers
  • A library archives exhibit on land and labor issues

Fall 2015

Wednesday, November 11 (Veteran's Day), 5:00pm, 2nd floor Nielsen Library: "War and Peace (1942-1954)": Screening of Episode 3 of the PBS documentary series Latino Americans that focuses on Latino American participation in World War II, including discrimination encountered before, during, and after the war and efforts to counter it. The film screening will be followed by a scholarly audience discussion led by Dr. Ben Waddell, ASU Associate Professor of Sociology. 5:00pm, 2nd floor Nielsen Library. A casual dinner will be served. Friday, November 13, 5:00pm, 2nd floor Nielsen Library: "Foreigners in their Own Land (1565-1880)": Screening of Episode 1 of the PBS documentary series Latino Americans that focuses on the Spanish Empire period. The film screening will be followed by a scholarly audience discussion led by Dr. Nick Saenz, ASU Assistant Professor of History. A casual dinner will be served.

Latino Americans: 500 Years of History Book Display: A collection of new books celebrating Latino American history, culture, heritage, and achievements. The exhibit will be displayed near the Nielsen Library circulation desk on the first floor throughout Oct-Dec, 2015. Items in the collection were acquired with NEH grant funds.
