eReserves Scanning Request Form

Reserves - Quick Info

  • Reserves are high-demand materials assigned for classes, kept at the 1st floor Circulation desk (can be books, DVDs, lab manuals, etc.).
  • Please bring your materials to the 1st floor Circulation Desk. Though we take every precaution we can, the library cannot assume liability for lost or damaged personal copies placed on reserve. [eReserves can be returned to faculty as soon as scanning is completed, and can be shelved with instructions not to be loaned to students; print reserves by nature must circulate, and are thus at higher risk.]
  • Print Reserves at Nielsen Library are offered for 2-hour checkout, mostly in-building use, for students to scan and email the content to themselves.
  • For print reserves: please bring print/physical materials to the library at least 2 business days before students will need them, as they need to be catalogued for checkout.
  • eReserves: In an increasingly digital world, Nielsen Library now recommends scanning material. This allows students access between busy work/school/athletics schedules, when the library may or may not be open.
  • For eReserves: we ask that faculty submit requests for digitization and deliver books at least two weeks in advance.
  • Faculty do need to provide copies of textbooks for this service, as we are unable to purchase textbooks [see our Purchasing policy]. We may consider purchasing other monographs, if they are deemed appropriate for the campus, but ordering & cataloging takes time. If the library already owns the material, we are happy to put it on Reserve for the term.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Amanda Langdon at ANLangdon@adams.edu or 719-587-7173.

What are "Reserves"? - Details

This information was taken directly from the Wikipedia page on Course Reserve:

Course reserve

Course reserve is a term used in academic libraries to describe materials set aside for a specific academic course or other use. Most often materials are put on course reserve by library staff at the request of the course's instructor. Materials on reserve typically have shorter loan periods than other library materials to allow access to a high volume of library patrons - for example, the students taking the course in question. Reserve materials usually return to normal circulation at the end of the term.

E-Reserves

Many academic libraries are installing software and supporting availability of course readings in digital formats through a service referred to as "E-reserves." The service provides controlled access to materials in a digital format but limited to students in a specific course. Such services are often connected to other classroom services for collaboration and course management.

Libraries often place excerpts from copyrighted works in closed or electronic reserves in accordance with Fair Use guidelines, which govern formal classroom distribution of photocopied materials and extend to reserve readings as well.

eReserves Requests

Please use the above form to identify the materials you would like placed or scanned on reserve for your class. "Whole Book" is not feasible, both for Copyright Law compliance and staffing-time. Please parse-out assigned chapters based on the need-by dates for student access.

Once we receive the book, reserve requests are processed in the order received + need-by dates; please expect some delay at the start of each semester; two weeks' notice -- before the content is needed by your students -- is requested for all material.

This form can accept up to 4 individual items (texts).  If you have more items to submit, please start a new form to submit those additional items.  You will get a copy of your completed form in your email.

Once digitized, the material will be uploaded to our eReserves platform, LibApps.

Each course will have an individual LibApps page, which can be accessed through Blackboard.

Faculty will need to connect their Blackboard shell to LibApps; instructions are in the PDF above.
