A 'primary source' is any official document from the time period of the event in question, an autobiography/memoir/book/article written by a direct participant, newspaper/photograph from the time of the event concerning the event, recording or transcription of a speech made during the event, or photograph/print media from the time of the event.
A 'secondary source' is anything that attaches later interpretation or analysis to the event. This can include later newspaper coverage, theses/dissertations about the event, biographical works about person(s) involved, or film/musical references. Secondary sources are useful for providing analyses and perspectives about the consequences of an event, but they should not be used as the foundation for your arguments.
